Parkinson's Disease is often said to be an incurable, progressive, and degenerative disease. It is our hypothesis that some of you do not, or will not, have a progressive disease. The goal of this PD study is to collect as much data as possible over a ten-year period with the hope of finding dietary and lifestyle factors associated with a slower disease progression.
The more people participate, the more likely the results are to reflect the true population. When thousands of people pool their data together, the MVP Study can identify trends in the population that are not visible to the individual.
Individuals with any form of parkinsonism, or a reason to suspect they may be at increased risk of parkinsonism, are invited to participate.
Parkinson’s disease (PD) - Parkinsonism - Multiple system atrophy (MSA)- Progressive Supranuclear palsy (PSP)- Corticobasal degeneration (CBGD) - Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) - Neurodegenerative disorder Not Otherwise Specified (Other)
No PD diagnosis, possible prodromal period - Individuals at above-average risk of Parkinsonism, e.g. include family history of parkinsonism, known gene carrier for a Parkinson-related disease, early-life or current dairy intake, history of head trauma, history of melanoma/ skin cancer, known pesticide exposure, acting out dreams (REM sleep behavior disorder), loss of smell, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, or constipation.
People have Parkinsonism for 10-20 years before their motor symptoms lead to a diagnosis. There are a growing number of ways people are alerting themselves to parkinsonism in the early years, before there are any motor symptoms.
Examples of reasons an individual may consider him/herself at risk: family history of parkinsonism, known gene carrier for a Parkinson-related disease, early-life or current dairy intake, history of head trauma, history of melanoma/ skin cancer, known pesticide exposure, history of well-water intake, acting out dreams (REM sleep behavior disorder), loss of smell, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, or constipation.
Participants must agree to fill out a survey every six months for ten years. You may stop participating at any time.
